About the Property

The house known as the 'Captain's Quarters' sits at the forest's edge, set back from the road and tucked into a very private estate. A four year build, (completed in 2008), it is filled with modern luxuries such as a gourmet kitchen, beautiful bluestone gas fireplace, radiant heated floors, a spa bath, air conditioning and wifi internet. Though the amenities are modern, the 'feel' of the home is steeped in an old world charm and beauty. Built with a love for the art, nothing was overlooked. From the heavy Douglas fir timbers, to the ornate cast iron radiators, much was borrowed from days gone by and re purposed here. Details in brass, marble, red wood, granite, copper, maple, limestone, and stained glass are to be found throughout.

This home was designed with friends and family in mind, and so is very social and entertains beautifully. It is truly a pleasure to experience!

The house is surrounded by gorgeous natural landscapes. White pines tower above mossy cliffs and rocky outcroppings. Wild life big and small weave through the trees. Sweeping cedars huddle and lean into each other. Colorful maples surround it all, both glowing over, and shading the acreage. There's even a pretty forest pond for the frogs and ducks, and ice skating come winter, that sits below a cozy 'lighthouse' on the bluff.

Property adjoins hundreds of acres of a diverse designated 'green spaces' that are woven with miles of walking and cross country ski trails.

This house is located in the perfect part of Duluth. While being only minutes away from Lake Superior and Downtown one way, and the malls and airport the other, there is still an absolutely enchanting feel to it all.

The property was clean, easy to find, very well kept and the owner was gracious and kind. Everything was in perfect working order and everything that was required in the home was provided. First class owner and a first class property made our experience more than we expected. We recommend this property to anyone looking to enjoy a nature experience while still being in the heart of Duluth area. The house is something that you would see in a magazine and even more impressive live. A 10!

What a great place. We enjoyed the chaos of Grandma's Marathon weekend knowing we could retreat to this secluded and amazing property. Kenwood is central to the entire city - east, west, or downtown

Our three generation family loved this beautiful home and yard, while touring the Duluth area. The owner was a great host.

We all enjoyed our stay at the Captains Quarters. The house is gorgeous and perfect for the 3 couples on this trip. Douglas deservedly has prideful ownership in this beautiful home. Tho, I don't prefer to cook while I'm on vacation, the kitchen had everything we needed for those who were more particular about food preparation or dietary restrictions where going out was not an option. Lots of spices and plenty of work space and a full fridge and a gourmet stove was appreciated. I loved hearing about the house construction and the grounds. We even saw a Pine Marten, a bear, and plenty of chipmunks and red squirrels. Thank you for a lovely visit, Douglas. We hope to come again!

We went with a group of 6 adults and 2 dogs and this was absolute perfection. First, the location is close to everything but far enough to feel “cabin-y” and private. Second, this home is GORGEOUS - Doug clearly put a lot of love, attention and time into this place because it shows. This is a true Craftsman home with amazing architecture and everything was beautiful and comfortable. We are really looking forward to planning another trip to Duluth and hoping to enjoy this place again for many years to come!!

This was a beautiful property with tons of fun stuff to do. We loved our time here and will definitely stay at Doug’s house next time we are in the area.

We’ve just returned home from our 4 day stay in this special property. Our family spent many of our “coffee moments” discussing the details that make this house so unique. So well done. We have stayed in many rental situations but this home was the most completely well supplied of any. Everything we needed was there. Our family of six would return in a heart beat. From 11 years old to 70, we were all impressed. Hope to see you again Doug. Thanks so much.

Very comfortable house. Kitchen is well equipped if you want to cook meals. Great appliances and plenty of dishes. Nice walking paths on the property, woodsy setting but still in the city. Beds are comfortable. TV area is small 4 can watch comfortably but generally not there to watch TV anyway. Beautifully crafted home, wood floors so it can be noisy going up and down stairs. Fire pit is such a pretty area with plenty of wood and seating. We enjoyed our evening - 4 of us had plenty of space. 6 people would be comfortable but 8 I think would be tight. We would definitely stay again. Thanks Doug.

Douglas was a great, informative host and the pictures do not lie: this is a one of a kind house in a terrific location.

This house and property were amazing. The house is wonderfully equipped. It had everything we needed, from plenty of towels, to lots of pots and pans, great kitchen knives, even a tea kettle. There was plenty of room for the 5 of us. We loved it and would go back.
